Polishing up Your Memory
by Ramona Richard, Nutritional Consultant
We would undoubtedly like to have a magic bullet when it comes to restoring our memory to the sharpness it was back when. And many of us have seen a family member slip into dementia and want to know how to not do that ourselves! How can we keep our precious memory? What can we do to polish it up?
The scientific literature is quite busy looking at just that. For example, we know that increased serotonin is associated with lower levels of amyloid- plaques, a hallmark of Alzheimers Disease (AD).We know that supplementing tryptophan, the precursor for serotonin synthesis, also decreases amyloid- plaques in rodents models.1 Building serotonin stores with tryptophan or its direct precursor, 5-HTP, may be a good intervention, particularly where depression is also a factor.
We also know from the literature that Omega-3 oils can delay the cognitive decline in patients at-risk for Mild Cognitive Impairment or Alzheimers Disease, as well as in AD patients themselves. Most of the studies show that using omega 3 oils works best when used beforehand, to delay onset. When we supplement with omega 3 fish oil, we are getting two important fatty acids: EPA and DHA. DHA is considered to be the main structural omega-3 fatty acid in the human brain.2 DHA comprises about 40% of the brains polyunsaturated oilsIF you have DHA in your diet or supplement regimen. Otherwise, the brain is obliged to use whatever oils you do include in your diet, but other oils do not work as well as the DHA from fish oil or algae. Dr. David Perlmutter, well-known neurologist and expert on dementia, suggests 1000 mg DHA daily for preventing dementias.3
Curcumin has been extensively investigated in AD models, where it shows significant benefits. This active ingredient of the root turmeric has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. One aspect of memory loss is high levels of inflammatory chemistry in the body. Inflammation is damaging to brain cells. Both omega 3 oils and curcumin reduce inflammation and so contribute to preserving memory and cognitive skills.
There are other supplements that also help keep our memory sharp as well. One of my favorites is phosphatidylserine or PS, for short. PS has many human studies showing its ability to protect our memories. PS can increase a now-famous growth factor in the brain: BDNF or Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor. This means it makes new neuron connections and repairs damaged ones. Studies often use 300 mg PS4 for the best effect, but even 100 mg daily can be useful.
