  • Are you prepared for the flu season?

    It is that time of year again! The leaves start turning, kids go back to school, and our immune systems work overtime. As we approach yet another fall season, there is a growing concern about the well-being of ourselves and our families. Although it seems early in the year, the flu season is rapidly approaching, and this is the perfect time to prepare.

    For those of us who shop at our local farmers markets, it is a great time to take advantage of the fall harvest. The peaches, nectarines, tomatoes, squashes and dark leafy greens are irresistible. Not only is this one of my favorite times of year for cooking delicious meals, it is also a time when many of us get sick. There are a number of foods that will strengthen our immune systems during this flu season.

    Of course, nothing works like homemade chicken soup! Try adding barley, wild rice, shiitake mushroom, garlic, ginger, onion, carrot, celery, kale and swiss chard.

    Even better, make your own stock from chicken bones, simmer with veggies, herbs and spices for several hours, and viola! This makes a great base for nourishing soups and stews. For additional immune support, add a few sticks of astragalus to the soup broth. Miso soup with fresh ginger and seaweed (wakame, kombu, arame) is another one of my favorite meals, and is particularly restorative for both the circulatory and digestive systems! For an amazingly healing beverage, combine fresh lemon juice, freshly grated ginger, local honey and a pinch of cayenne to hot water.

    Rather than waiting for symptoms to begin, wouldn’t it be great to avoid the flu entirely! I recommend preparing far in advance. This is where the Way of Life can help!
